Notes about the Church | On the back flyleaf is the following: "Thomas Barnes hath beene Vicar of this parish […] years. The Towne was burnte the 21st of Auguste anno domini 1596 the vicaridge house was burnte then and almost all his goods to his greate hurte in years paste. Thomas Barnes Vicar had 7 children borne and baptised in Uttoxeter their names are folowith: John Barnes Thomas Barnes James Barnes Willm Barnes Jones Barnes Mary Barnes and Anne Barnes" According to https://archive.org/details/AGeneralHistoryOfUttoxeter/page/n29/mode/2up Thomas Barnes was vicar from 1566-1617. The church was destroyed by fire in 1596 and the existing register begins in that year. As there are no baptisms for the abovementioned children in the register, it is assumed that they were baptised before 1596. |
